MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING:

AN INTRODUCTION TO WORKING THERAPEUTICALLY WITH MOTHERS IN THE PERINATAL PERIOD

Maternal mental health is often considered a niche area for therapists, but 50% of the population are women, and a significant number of those women will become mothers at some point. Even for those who do not, many will at some stage have wanted to become a mother or parent, and exploring the question, “Do I want children?” can be considered an almost universal human experience.

If you work in therapy, healthcare, or other community support services, whether you specialise in this area or not, you are highly likely to work with mothers. Their experiences of motherhood will almost certainly enter any therapeutic space.

Drawing on my knowledge, experience and expertise in this area of work, I want to support fellow practitioners & both qualified and in- training therapists, to feel both confident and capable working with this client group.

I am an experienced and qualfied Counsellor Psychotherapist, Supervisor & Trainer, with a masters degree in Advanced Couselling Psychotherapy & Supervision, as well as qualfied teacher status PGCE Psychology.

This 90-minute workshop would is delivered in small groups of up to five participants, online via Zoom.

Join experienced counsellor and psychotherapist Sarah Edge for a webinar exploring maternal mental health and how therapists can feel more confident supporting mothers in clinical practice.

Drawing on over 15 years of therapeutic experience, including six years specialising in maternal mental health, this workshop offers a compassionate and person-centred introduction to the psychological realities of pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition to motherhood.

Together, we will explore the emotional impact of motherhood, including themes of identity change, trauma, grief, loss, adjustment, infant feeding experiences, bonding concerns, and the wider challenges that can contribute to psychological distress during the perinatal period.

Rather than focusing on diagnosis or clinical assessment, this webinar aims to deepen your understanding of motherhood as a significant life transition and provide valuable context for working therapeutically with mothers.

Participants will (hopefully) leave with greater confidence in welcoming mothers into their practice, understanding their experiences, and responding with empathy, knowledge, and sensitivity.

This interactive session encourages discussion, reflection, and questions throughout, creating a supportive learning environment where practitioners can build their confidence, and recognise their exisiting competence, in this important area of mental health.
